The Way of Strategy

February 15, 2008 By Chris Corrigan Leadership 2 Comments

From Mushashi’s Book of Five Rings, the way of strategy:

  • Do not think dishonestly.
  • The Way is in training.
  • Become acquainted with every art.
  • Know the Ways of all professions.
  • Distinguish between gain and loss in worldly matters.
  • Develop intuitive judgement and understanding for everything.
  • Perceive those things which cannot be seen.
  • Pay attention even to trifles.
  • Do nothing which is of no use.

What if strategic planning was like that?

At Bastyr we are just embarking on a round of strategic planning; perfect timing for the steering group to contemplate this list (maybe any time would be perfect timing to contemplate this list). It seems that it would require deep practice to be able to do all these things, and that doing all these things would constitute deep practice.

I like your website. You may be interested in my new book, “Breaking the Musashi Code: Transcending Competition Through Visionary Strategy.” Send me an email sometime if you would like to discuss, or even collaborate.
