Developmental evaluation

October 29, 2010 By Chris Corrigan Learning 6 Comments

Three very interesting resources on a new form of evaluation to me, developmental evaluation, created by Michael Quinn Patton:

  • A Developmental Evaluation Primer
  • Patton’s own slides on developmental evaluation
  • A practitioner’s guide to developmental evaluation

This is the first thing I have seen on evaluation that has got me excited about the connection between complexity, systems thinking and change.

Thanks Chris! Good food for the soul – reading on the plane tomorrow – off to Kufunda!

I attended a workshop yesterday on community based evaluation. A question I had was what would “open space” evaluation look like. Perhaps these docs will tell me!

Hi Chris – thanks for this. Patton’s work was the basis of evaluation training I used to do a few years ago. This might just get me interested again! Cheers, Viv

Thanks for these Chris. I liked the point in the slideshow that contrasted traditional evaluation’s engendering fear of failure vs development evaluation engendering hunger for learning.

That gets to the nub of many of my concerns about the shadow side of evaluation.

Me too Johnnie…perhaps we can talk more about this.

I like the interweaving of the Cynefin framework with the purpose of development-as-adaptive and the notion(s) of self-managed/ing evaluation.

Makes sense, and all using known and effective group dynamics processes. Neat.
