The history of the small group of islands that he owns obsesses him. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"42l81-2-0\"> \u00a0He charts the archaeology and natural history of the islands, and the book <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"42l81-3-0\">is filled<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"42l81-4-0\"> with the characters who are the real owners of the place &#8211; the crofters and shepherds that work the land as tenants witinn the strange Scottish systems of private land ownership<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"42l81-5-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"2rb17-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2rb17-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2rb17-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-0-0\">Nicolson expresses some astonishment at the amount of activity that has taken place on the Shiants over history because they <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-1-0\">are considered<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-2-0\"> so remote now<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"a3m1q-3-0\">. It doesn&#8217;t escape him that this might be by design<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"fhkp2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"fhkp2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fhkp2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"an3e1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"an3e1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"an3e1-0-0\">When I was on Iona last month I was also struck by how somewhere so remote was at one time the focus of a mass pilgrimage. In the 15th century thousands of people travelled every year to visit the relics held at the Abbey there. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"cuikn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cuikn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cuikn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-0-0\">When you look at a map of the Hebrides, you can see that these islands are beyond the ends of the world, connected as it is these days by roads<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-2-0\">\u00a0To get to Iona from Glasgow involves two ferries and when you&#8217;re finally there, you&#8217;re much closer to Ireland than to Glasgow<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"dqrgb-3-0\">. \u00a0But Ireland is away across the sea. \u00a0You can&#8217;t get there from here. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"13fm5-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"13fm5-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"13fm5-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"6jkbi-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6jkbi-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6jkbi-0-0\">Yet, it wasn&#8217;t always that way. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6jkbi-1-0\">When the traditional cultures and communities of the Hebrides were strong, families rowed and sailed through the islands for work and trade and spiritual reasons<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6jkbi-2-0\">. \u00a0For a culture based on the sea, places like Iona are at the very centre of the world. The abbey at Iona was as important and accessible to worshippers as St. Paul&#8217;s in London, or The Vatican. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"4iuhu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4iuhu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4iuhu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-0-0\">During the period of most recent colonization, since the late 1700s, Hebridean culture ended up on the margins of the world<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-1-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-2-0\">\u00a0Travellers like Samual Johnson visited and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Journey_to_the_Western_Islands_of_Scotland\">wrote patronizing books<\/a> about the lives of the people huddled together in large communal blackhouses, shared with their animals, surviving on meagre soils, livestock and fish<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4tnfk-3-0\">. \u00a0The colonizers paint a picture of Hebridean communities that need saving.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"8t3vv-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8t3vv-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8t3vv-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"cigdm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cigdm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-0-0\">This same strategy &#8211; of decentering a culture and a world &#8211; happened on the west coast of Canada too. Place like Bella Bella, Kitkatla and Wuikinuxv all which <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-1-0\">are considered<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-2-0\"> remote now. They are inaccessible by car, and can only <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-3-0\">be reached by<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-4-0\"> water or air. But the Heitlsuk, Tsimshian and\u00a0Wuikinuxv peoples are canoeing cultures. Traversing the waters of the central coast was never a big deal. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-5-0\">\u00a0Bella Bella sits right in the middle of the BC Coast, a place of strategic importance between many different cultures<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-6-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-7-0\">Until Europeans showed up and began building roads and cities elsewhere, these communities were the heart of the 9000 year history of human occupation on the coast<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-8-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-9-0\">Almost overnight they went from places of immense importance to places of massive inconvenience<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-10-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-11-0\">People <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-12-0\">were moved<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-13-0\">, villages relocated, children stolen and housed in residential schools so that the colonial governments could &#8220;care for&#8221; their wards<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"cigdm-14-0\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"6bpks-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6bpks-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6bpks-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-0-0\">The result of course has been a massive seismic upturning of culture and power. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-1-0\">\u00a0That is being resisted today with increasing vigour, <a href=\"http:\/\/coastalfirstnations.ca\">and on the central coast in particular<\/a>, it is becoming obvious that the indigenous governments are the ones best equipped to manage resources, develop economies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/british-columbia\/heiltsuk-first-nation-claims-victory-over-disputed-herring-fishery\/article23757390\/\">protect marine and territorial ecosystems<\/a><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-2-0\">. \u00a0This <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-3-0\">ultimately<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5ci3m-4-0\"> benefits everyone who lives in these territories, both indigenous and non-indigenous.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"6g14c-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6g14c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6g14c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4cmej\" data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-0-0\">The decentering of entire cultures is a core tactic of colonization. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-1-0\">People that never needed help are <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-2-0\">suddenly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-3-0\"> cast as poor, disconnected and in need of aid for their very survival<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-4-0\">. \u00a0What <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-5-0\">is needed<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-6-0\"> instead is a recentering of the world on their communities and ways of life. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-7-0\">Governance, ownership and leadership should lie with the people who best understand the land and seas<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"c8rdd-8-0\">. When that happens, the results are better for everyone.
