{"id":3993,"date":"2014-01-24T12:48:37","date_gmt":"2014-01-24T20:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/?p=3993"},"modified":"2014-01-24T12:48:37","modified_gmt":"2014-01-24T20:48:37","slug":"capacity-engagement-and-authentic-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/capacity-engagement-and-authentic-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Capacity, engagement and authentic learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think there is probably nothing new under the sun.  \u00a0Engagement work has been tried, refined and improved all over the world in the last couple of decades that I wonder if there is anything new we can learn?  \u00a0It does seem to fall into &#8220;authentic engagement&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/bowenislandjournal.blogspot.ca\/2013\/11\/unethical-consultation-and-conflicts-of.html\">engagement washing<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; if I can coin a couple of phrases.  \u00a0But I haven&#8217;t seen radically new thinking or practice for a while.<\/p>\n<p>What we are getting instead is some terrific collections of tools, handbooks and harvests of processes.  \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/uploadedFiles\/special\/CivicEngagement\/web_boxes\/Attach%201%20CE%20Revised%20WNA%20Handbook%2012.20.13%20resize.pdf\">This .pdf of a Handbook for Civic Engagement<\/a> prepared for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/WhatsNext\">a community process in the United States<\/a> is an excellent example of the kind of harvesting that is useful.  \u00a0It sums up lessons learned from engagement process, proceeds from practice to inform theory and provides some useful invitations for practice and application.  \u00a0This is an artifact which has emerged out of the space of engagement &#8220;praxis&#8221; &#8211; the gap between theory and practice.  \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artofhosting.ning.com\/group\/creating-some-theory\/\">I&#8217;m interested in tis inquiry at the moment,<\/a> and stumbling across things like this in my quest to understand what is useful in harvesting from initiatives that sustain the capacity and learning begun in real engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Engagement washing&#8221; initiatives don&#8217;t usually leave these kinds of documents in the places where the engagement took place.  \u00a0It should be a hall mark of good practice that process learnings are shared and tools are developed as well as results documented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think there is probably nothing new under the sun. \u00a0Engagement work has been tried, refined and improved all over the world in the last couple of decades that I wonder if there is anything new we can learn? \u00a0It does seem to fall into &#8220;authentic engagement&#8221; and &#8220;engagement washing&#8221; &#8211; if I can coin a couple of phrases. \u00a0But I haven&#8217;t seen radically new thinking or practice for a while.
