Some things are better defined<\/p>\n
by what they are not,<\/p>\n
as when snow heaping the world<\/p>\n
replaces the world, becoming<\/p>\n
no longer a rooftop, no longer a narrow<\/p>\n
gravel shoreline or road,<\/p>\n
even in times, in places,<\/p>\n
no longer the black breathing<\/p>\n
of the sea.<\/p>\n
In this way the polar bear<\/p>\n
stealing her difficult, beautiful life<\/p>\n
from the ridges<\/p>\n
and drifts, the colorless<\/p>\n
plateau around her,<\/p>\n
teaches her young to hunt<\/p>\n
by sliding her belly<\/p>\n
flat along the frozen light,<\/p>\n
blunting her cloudlike<\/p>\n
respiration, covering<\/p>\n
with one comic paw<\/p>\n
the dark flesh of her nose,<\/p>\n
so well suited to her artifice<\/p>\n
that the oily<\/p>\n
seals collecting the ice<\/p>\n
are pulled by an intimate<\/p>\n
landscape, soundless<\/p>\n
