{"id":2331,"date":"2009-09-15T22:33:52","date_gmt":"2009-09-16T06:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/?p=2331"},"modified":"2009-09-15T22:33:52","modified_gmt":"2009-09-16T06:33:52","slug":"from-intention-to-dedication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/from-intention-to-dedication\/","title":{"rendered":"From intention to dedication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.audiodharma.org\/mp3files\/2009-08-24_GilFronsdal_Intentions.mp3\">a nice talk by Gil Fronsdel<\/a> tonight on intention.  \u00a0THis is intention from a Buddhist perspective, not from a new age perspective.  \u00a0the difference for me is that the former is intention that informs action, the later is a passive state that somehow manifests things.  \u00a0I practice the former.<\/p>\n<p>From his talk, a couple of useful observations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>First, many people when they are asked to state their intention actually come up withe a negative intention: &#8220;To not repeat the mistakes of my parents, to be alone, to leave my job.&#8221;  \u00a0Such intentions are valid by don&#8217;t lead to action.  \u00a0If you find yourself considering an intention like this, Fronsdel counsels to reframe this as a positive intention by asking &#8220;Fine, then what?  \u00a0What will that get you&#8221;  \u00a0The key here is to cultivate action that is rooted in intention.  \u00a0To do that you need to find a positive, generative intention.<\/p>\n<p>Second, Fronsdel talks about reframing &#8220;intention&#8221; as &#8220;dedication.&#8221;  \u00a0I like this partly as a way of moving away from what is becoming an empty word: intention.  \u00a0Fronsdel asks &#8220;What is your life dedicated to?&#8221;  \u00a0This question helps to frame an inquiry into one&#8217;s intention as an inquiry into one&#8217;s life that exists for others.<\/p>\n<p>So, to what is your life dedicated?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to a nice talk by Gil Fronsdel tonight on intention. \u00a0THis is intention from a Buddhist perspective, not from a new age perspective. \u00a0the difference for me is that the former is intention that informs action, the later is a passive state that somehow manifests things. \u00a0I practice the former.
