When I read this Neruda poem, I thought of my wife.<\/p>\n

Sonnet XVII
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz<\/p>\n

or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:<\/p>\n

I love you as certain dark things are loved,<\/p>\n

secretly, between the shadow and the soul.<\/p>\n

I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom and carries<\/p>\n

hidden within itself the light of those flowers,<\/p>\n

and thanks to your love, darkly in my body<\/p>\n

lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.<\/p>\n

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,<\/p>\n

I love you simply, without problems or pride:<\/p>\n

I love you in this way because I don’t know any other way of loving<\/p>\n

but this, in which there is no I or you,<\/p>\n

so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,<\/p>\n
