{"id":153,"date":"2003-03-31T15:27:07","date_gmt":"2003-03-31T23:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscorrigan.com\/blogs\/?p=153"},"modified":"2003-03-31T15:27:07","modified_gmt":"2003-03-31T23:27:07","slug":"91738760","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/91738760\/","title":{"rendered":"91738760"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In response to <a href=\"http:\/\/portland.indymedia.org\/front.php3?article_id=55024\">this sickening story<\/a> which came via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncf.ca\/~ek867\/wood_s_lot.html\">wood s lot<\/a>, I can only weep, and hold on to the thought that there is hope and peace out there, somewhere.  <\/p>\n<p>And I can also post this poem from <a href=\"http:\/\/capa.conncoll.edu\/morgan.arcticherd.html#17\">John Morgan&#8217;s book <i>The Arctic Herd<\/i><\/a> which sort of takes me to where those Marines are now in a different way.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Ambush<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A light with the richness<br \/>\nof cream pours over the bar.<br \/>\nSlack night. I sip a glass<br \/>\nof beer remembering who I think<br \/>\nI am and then forgetting.<br \/>\n&#8220;Killing&#8217;s more direct than talk,&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>he says, says he could do it still<br \/>\nbut what&#8217;s the use? His breath&#8217;s<br \/>\na heavy metal stink about like dirt<br \/>\nor the wide circles<br \/>\nof waiting he pledged allegiance to<br \/>\nbefore his birth. <\/p>\n<p>Camped in the Asian dark,<br \/>\nsick on his first patrol,<br \/>\nhe tells me how they wouldn&#8217;t<br \/>\ntalk to him, his alien platoon<br \/>\nthat first night out. Then<br \/>\nsomething like a finger beckoning. <\/p>\n<p>He turns, hears in his middle ear<br \/>\na bird&#8217;s frail tune,<br \/>\nthick eons shouldering over oceans of recall.<br \/>\nWith hardly time to think<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s off his stool, rolling<br \/>\nin a fit of peanut shells and drool. <\/p>\n<p>The mind at war<br \/>\nhas got its reasons. Plunging<br \/>\nin a sink of need,<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s there as well as here<br \/>\nhands tensed around his snub-nosed,<br \/>\nsharp-toothed pet, <\/p>\n<p>and suddenly I could do<br \/>\nwith one less beer.
