{"id":1175,"date":"2007-05-23T22:36:08","date_gmt":"2007-05-24T06:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/?p=1175"},"modified":"2007-05-23T22:36:08","modified_gmt":"2007-05-24T06:36:08","slug":"working-up-in-bella-coola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chriscorrigan.com\/parkinglot\/working-up-in-bella-coola\/","title":{"rendered":"Working up in Bella Coola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511765294\/\"><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" alt=\"Petroglyphs and water\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/225\/511765294_9fd559caff_m.jpg?resize=240%2C180\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><em>Bella Coola, BC<\/em><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">I&#8217;m up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellacoola.ca\/\">Bella Coola<\/a> this week working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aboriginalcanada.gc.ca\/acp\/community\/site.nsf\/en\/fn539.html\">Nuxalk Nation<\/a>. \u00a0 I am running some facilitation training and then on Saturday, an Open Space meeting here in the community on the subject of reclaiming Nuxalk child and family services.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">This place is out in the middle of <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?hl=en&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;om=1&#038;t=h&#038;ll=52.368,-126.759&#038;spn=0.049892,0.160675&#038;z=13\">virtually nowhere<\/a>. \u00a0 It&#8217;s 450 kms west of Williams Lake, but only an hour and a quarter by plane. \u00a0 However, the Bella Coola valley is surrounded by the tallest mountains in the Coastal Range and man are they huge. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511361540\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">We flew PAST them<\/a> this morning, over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511384897\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">Monarch Icefield<\/a>, in what was one of the most breathtaking flights I have ever taken.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">After landing, I went to lunch with the Elders and we ate the first spring salmon of the year. \u00a0 The fish were half smoked and then finished on a barbeque, cooked over a fire right outside the church where we were eating. \u00a0 Nuxalk fishers are pouring onto the river this week, catching fish by drifting in a boat with the current and setting nets. \u00a0 The fish swim up and the nets are carried down and after an hour of drifting, you have yourself some fish. \u00a0 Everyone&#8217;s excited at the prospect of fresh salmon again. \u00a0 Much of the traditional fishery has disappeared these days including the essential <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eulachon\">eulachon<\/a> fishery which once provided a massive staple to the community. \u00a0 Eulachons are so healthy that they act as a virtually prevention medicine cabinet. \u00a0 There has been an eulachon run on the Bella Coola river in 15 years.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">After lunch my client, Liz Hall and I joined her sister <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511793787\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">Sylvia<\/a> and her husband Mark and we hiked up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511764210\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">incredibly <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511764210\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">impressive petroglyphs<\/a> up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511765748\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">Thorsen Creek<\/a>. \u00a0 These are old, some carved as long ago as 3500 years by Sylvia&#8217;s reckoning. \u00a0 There are more modern ones as well, made with metal implements, and consisting of thinner lines.<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511799333\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">It&#8217;s breathtaking up here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chriscorrigan\/511766306\/in\/set-72157600253895061\/\">good spirits<\/a> are with us and I&#8217;m keen to look get working tomorrow.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bella Coola, BC I&#8217;m up in Bella Coola this week working with the Nuxalk Nation. \u00a0 I am running some facilitation training and then on Saturday, an Open Space meeting here in the community on the subject of reclaiming Nuxalk child and family services.
