From Walt Whitman’s Song of the Universal<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

In this broad earth of ours,
\nAmid the measureless grossness and the slag,
\nEnclosed and safe within its central heart,
\nNestles the seed perfection.<\/p>\n

By every life a share or more or less,
\nNone born but it is born, conceal’d or unconceal’d the seed is waiting.<\/p>\n

Lo! keen-eyed towering science,
\nAs from tall peaks the modern overlooking,
\nSuccessive absolute fiats issuing.<\/p>\n

Yet again, lo! the soul, above all science,
\nFor it has history gather’d like husks around the globe,
\nFor it the entire star-myriads roll through the sky.<\/p>\n

In spiral routes by long detours,
\n(As a much-tacking ship upon the sea,)
\nFor it the partial to the permanent flowing,
\nFor it the real to the ideal tends.<\/p>\n

For it the mystic evolution,
\nNot the right only justified, what we call evil also justified.<\/p>\n

Forth from their masks, no matter what,
\nFrom the huge festering trunk, from craft and guile and tears,
\nHealth to emerge and joy, joy universal.<\/p>\n

Out of the bulk, the morbid and the shallow,
\nOut of the bad majority, the varied countless frauds of men and states,
\nElectric, antiseptic yet, cleaving, suffusing all,
\nOnly the good is universal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I am feeling the strong work of noticing patterns in everything: the patterns in my work with groups and organizations, in the family, in training and in reading. The patterns and languages that keep us at the rim of our experience but that also lead us to the centre. I have much more to say about this, but for the time being, suffice to note that Whitman articulaes my foundational premise in this: “Only the good is universal.”<\/p>\n
