Music

A large part of my life is dedicated to playing music and especially traditional Irish dance music on the wooden flute. I play and record in British Columbia and frequently I appear on Bowen Island, at a variety of venues, festivals, coffee houses and events. These are usually trio gigs, with a selection of guitar and fiddle players.

You can hear my playing on "In the Heather" an album done for the benefit of the Portland Hotel Society in Vancouver. I have also recorded pieces for the Bowen Island Music Exchange CD, a project featuring 7 Bowen Island bands playing each other's music, and two Christmas albums with other Bowen Island musicians. Over the years, my music has been broadcast on CiTR (Vancouver), Co-op Radio (Vancouver), Trent Radio (Peterborough, Ontario) and the CBC, and has been reviewed in fRoots and the Georgia Straight.

I have appeared on stage at the Rogue Folk Club, The Gulf Islands Celtic Music Festival, Northwest Folklife in Seattle and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival among other festivals.

Instruments

I play a six key Hammy Hamilton flute made of African Blackwood and a Casey Burns keyless grenadilla flute. I also play whistle, guitar and didgeridoo. I have an obscene collection of whistles, mostly Generations, and Waltons but also including a Susato. My guitar is a Yamaha FG-410, which I have had since 1982. My didgeridoo was made by termites in Northern Australia and purchased in Perth, Western Australia.

Sounds

Have a listen to some of the music I make. These are 2-3 Mb mp3s:
  • Hawtin's Return, from the 2003 Bowen Island Music Exchange CD. Me on flute and Randy Vic on fiddle and guitar. I wrote this tune for my friend Paul Hawtin, a superb guitarist who moved away to Ottawa.
  • Kavana's Craic - Punter's Graveyeard - The Phoienix. Three reels from "In The Heather." I wrote the first tune and you can hear me on flute, Randy Vic on banjo and Steph Custer on fiddle over Andy Hilhouse and Paul Hawtin on guitars.
  • Tunes on paper. Dave Marshall has annotated the sessions tunes from the Irish Heather and he publishes the sheet music as well as small midis at his site, FiddleTech.
