Aine's idea

In the wake of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, there has been a lot of public talk about war.  While no one is making any apologies for these obscene acts of terrorism, many people are trying to struggle with the issues they raise of compassion, justice, vengeance and peace.  Illustration by Reinhard Kuchenmuller

I wrote a piece that was inspired by a game I was playing with my daughter Aine.  I posted it to two LISTSERVS that I participate in and the response has been overwhelming.  It has traveled the world, and I have heard from people all over the place about their reactions to my story and Aine's simple idea.  Painting by Nancy Margulies. Her response appears on page 1 of the responses with an explanation of the image

People have written to me to share their reactions about the essay.  Some have sent poetry, one person made a painting, someone even illustrated the piece.  He did a beautiful job.

I'm frankly a little taken aback by all the attention, but, as it keeps coming in and seems not to be stopping at all, I have decided to create these pages to share with the world what the world has shared with me and Aine.
